Alcoa employees take ACTION!

|
Seven Alcoa Intalco Works employees took ACTION to help the Fisher Elementary School's Parent Volunteer Organization with an 'Extreme Makeover' of the Teachers' Lounge this weekend.
ACTION - Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighborhoods - is a program that recognizes the community volunteer contributions of teams of Alcoa employees by providing a financial contribution to the non-profit organization with which they work.
In this instance the Parent Volunteer Organization received $1500.
Intalco employee and Fisher Elementary School dad, Jason Swendt, organized the Intalco team to work on the event.
"My wife was involved in organizing the makeover for Teacher Appreciation Week and asked if there was anyway Alcoa could assist with a financial contribution," Jason said.
"When I inquired, I found out that through ACTION we could do more than just provide dollars but were encouraged to provide volunteer help too.
"I got to work rounding up my co-workers, some of whom have children at Fisher Elementary and some who don't. Together we volunteered around 45 hours on Friday night and Saturday."
Parent Volunteer Coordinator Megan Vopnford said it was remarkable that Alcoa was able to provide such willing volunteers, many of whom do not have children attending Fisher school.
"With a simple request for assistance, Alcoa provided volunteers and a grant of $1500 that helped us achieve a makeover way beyond our initial thoughts of just re-painting the teacher's lounge.
"Instead, we were able to give our hardworking teachers a newly repainted lounge, new furnishings, and probably most importantly - a brand new coffee machine.
"It's pretty fantastic to have these types of resources in our business community," she said.
Alcoa has a long history of supporting employee volunteerism. In addition to the ACTION program, the organization supports employees who volunteer more than 50 hours per year with a non-profit by providing that organization with a contribution of $250. And during the Annual Month of Service, Alcoa employees from around the world are involved in volunteer activities in the communities in which they live and work.
