The Whatcom Literacy Council has received a grant of $10,125 from Alcoa Intalco Works through the Alcoa Foundation.
This grant will support tutoring for one year for 27 students. These students will be improving their employability and/or parenting skills through literacy.
The foundation supports the following Areas of Excellence:
- Conservation and Sustainability
- Global Education and Workplace Skills
- Business and Community Partnerships
- Safe and Healthy Children and Families
Alcoa Intalco Works has been a long-time partner with the Whatcom Literacy Council from sponsoring events to providing volunteer tutors. Their support has been critical to the support of adults in Whatcom County through literacy.
The Whatcom Literacy Council is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization helping adults learn to read or use English as a second language. For more information call 647-3264. It is estimated that one in five adults in the United States is functionally illiterate. This means that 30,000 people in Whatcom County may need literacy services.
