Alcoa employee volunteers at northwest smelters contribute more than 60,000 hours to nearly 200 community projects

Workers from the Alcoa Wenatchee Works and Alcoa Ferndale smelters have been turning their energies towards community service projects since the temporary closure of smelters in their communities.

Workers from the Ferndale smelter have contributed more than 10,000 hours of community work since November while workers from the Alcoa Wenatchee Works smelter topped 50,000 hours on over 175 various projects.

Some projects that the workers have been involved with have included finishing a basement for the Good Grief Center, upgrading Campfire USA’s Camp Zanikalache, and painting the Children’s Home Security Office.

Dianne Cornell, executive director of United Way of Cheland and Douglas Counties that supports 24 regional organizations, reported that the sudden influx of volunteers has more than doubled the available volunteer hours. “I think its been a fantastic use of their time and skills, and a definite benefit to the community at large,” she said. “I can’t say enough good things about them.”
