Alcoa Intalco Works - A Partner in Education and Conservation
May 6, 2003 Alcoa Intalco Works received the 2003 Outstanding Community Business Award by the Bellingham Public School Foundation at the 2003 "Celebrate Teamwork" event on May 6. Intalco donated $128,000 for student support programs, including the DARE and School Resource Officer Programs, and homeless education services. It also funded an intervention/prevention specialist position within the district.
Intalco was also named Business of the Quarter by the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA), a leader in stream restoration in Washington State, for funding, through a $75,000 grant, a Washington Conservation Corps/AmeriCorps youth crew for a year and providing project coordination, equipment, tools and materials for the group. By engaging youth in work for salmon recovery, NSEA and Alcoa are partnering to support efforts to develop the community workforce through on-the-job training opportunities.
Funding for both projects was awarded through the Alcoa/BPA Fund, a special fund set up by Alcoa and the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) during the energy crisis.
