Bowling for kids' sake
When Big Brothers Big Sisters Board Member and Alcoa Intalco Works Casting Manager Karen Madison told Operations Manager Dave Boyer about the bowling event designed to raise money to support Northwest Washington's Big Brothers Big Sisters program, Dave stepped up and accepted the challenge from Intalco's neighboring industrial facility, British Petroleum (BP): The company to raise the least money for BB BS Bowl for Kids' Sake would serve pizza to the company to raise the most money. Between the two companies, numerous teams made up of BP and Intalco employees raised more than $25,000 for the cause - nearly ¼ of the total amount raised. True to his word, when BP out raised Intalco, Dave and Karen served pizzas to the BP employees who bowled in the "competition." Knowing Intalco employee participation had risen significantly from the year before and not to be outdone for long, Dave and Karen reissued the challenge for 2004. A little healthy competition supported more than one good cause: Thousands of dollars were raised for a vital community organization and employees from both companies were able to relax, have some fun, and get to know each other a little better.
