Alcoan named “2003 Volunteer Medical Responder of the Year”

Alcoan Jon Brief of the Detroit Sales Office says that once firefighting gets into your blood, it’s there for good. Having grown up next to a fire station in Traverse City, Michigan, when Brief turned 18 he immediately started training and became a volunteer firefighter with both the East Bay and Acme Township Fire Departments. For the past four years, Brief has been volunteering with the Waterford Township Volunteer Firefighters and is currently serving his second year-long term as President of the Waterford Township Volunteer Firefighter’s Association, the organization that guides the Waterford volunteer firefighters. But his involvement with the firefighters doesn’t stop here.

Brief is also the accountability officer at fire scenes, responsible for knowing the location of each person on his team. In June, Brief will complete training to become a safety officer where upon completion, he will also be responsible for monitoring fire scenes for safe conditions, a role that he says goes hand in hand with being accountability officer. He explained, “As the safety officer, I would keep an eye out for all unsafe conditions on scenes . . . such as signs of imminent building collapse such as roofs, floors, or walls, potential explosions or other hazards that may cause harm to our firefighters or citizens. As accountability officer, I know where all of my firefighters are at all times, and can get them out of potentially dangerous situations.”

Brief also serves as the Chief Liaison between the career firefighters and the volunteer association, and is an Emergency Medical Technician and Volunteer EMS Instructor for Waterford Township.

Brief humbly said of his most recent award of 2003 Volunteer Medical Responder of the Year, selected and presented by his peers, “People are passionate about different things. I am passionate about firefighting.”
