Alcoa Technical Center Accepting Grant Proposals

NEW KENSINGTON - JANUARY 21, 2008 - Alcoa Technical Center is now accepting concept papers from local non-profit organizations in Westmoreland County for 2008 Alcoa Foundation community-based grants.

Last year, Alcoa Foundation awarded more than $160,000 to non-profit organizations in the Alle-Kiski Valley region to benefit veterans, middle school students, the elderly, victims of violence and the economically disadvantaged.

The deadline to submit a concept paper for 2008 is February 29. Concept papers can be submitted electronically to ATCCommunications@alcoa.com. Concept papers can also be mailed to Alcoa Technical Center, Attn. Judy Chestnutt, 100 Technical Drive, Alcoa Center, Pa. 15069.

Alcoa Foundation grants administered through Alcoa Technical Center should align with one of the three following themes for funding:
  • Global education and workplace skills, with an emphasis in the area of math and science education
  • Conservation and sustainability
  • Safe and healthy children and families

Only organizations classified as public charities and tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code will be considered for a community-based grant. Non-governmental organizations may also qualify to submit a grant request.

Concept paper review and funding recommendations will be guided by Alcoa Technical Center's Community Advisory Board, comprised of business and community leaders in the Alle-Kiski Valley region.

In general, Alcoa Foundation does not consider the following for funding:
  • Individuals
  • Organizations and programs designed to influence legislation or elect candidates to public office
  • Sectarian or religious organizations whose services are limited to members of one religious group
  • Religious programs
  • Endowment funds, capital campaigns, or funds directed towards deficit reduction or operating reserves
  • Trips, conferences, seminars, festivals, one-day events, unless they are a part of an approved program activity
  • Documentaries or videos
  • Indirect or overhead costs
  • Private foundations
  • Trust funds
