As part of its 2004 public affairs and community relations program, ATC partnered with St. Vincent College’s Small Business Development Center to offer its Alcoa Business System (ABS) expertise to local businesses as part of the College’s Lean Manufacturing Program.
The last week in February, ATC hosted 15 area business representatives at the Lab Lodge for a seminar focused on learning how to apply various principles of lean manufacturing, which is extremely similar to ABS, to a variety of manufacturing scenarios. ATC’s Ken Kallaher, Director of Applied Engineering, kicked off the Seminar by providing participants with an overview of Alcoa. They then heard from Ken on how ABS underscores all of Alcoa’s processes and how it’s contributed to our success.
Later in the program, Ron Sterniak, Division Manager, Engineering, Maintenance and Machining, told the group more about how ATC is organized and how we’re applying ABS principles here. Ron then led the group on a tour of the Machine Shop area where the group had the chance to see ABS in action and ask questions about processes in their actual environment.
St. Vincent and the seminar participants were so impressed with Alcoa’s knowledge that they have approached us about coming back with additional students later this year. For more information, please contact Lori Gallagher at ext. 2725.
