Alcoa Foundation sponsors the initiative with $3.000.00 in aid to the Espuéndolas Residents' Association

Volunteers from Alcoa Sabiñánigo improve the surroundings of the Santa Isabel hermitage

Workers from Alcoa's plant in Sabiñánigo and residents of Espuéndolas will participate next Saturday in the planting of native trees and weed removal from the surroundings of the Santa Isabel hermitage, an area affected by soil erosion. This activity, voluntary in nature, falls within the Alcoa Foundation's Action Plan, which was conceived to support volunteerism among company workers. To accomplish this, it provides $3,000.00 to a not-for-profit organization that participates in a social project with at least 10 Alcoa employees. On this occasion, the Asociación de Vecinos de Espuéndolas (Huesca) (Espuéndolas Residents' Association) received said amount.

The envisioned activity will take place in the surroundings of the ancient Santa Isabel hermitage, at the site known as Corona de Asprilla. The town under its parish is now fenced throughout its entire perimeter. However, the ancient church is located on the outside - visible, but surrounded by a large mass of vegetation. It has preserved a flat headpiece and a gate with a Moorish arch at the foot of the southern wall, considered to be the item with the most personality and beauty. Built with ashlars, it has undergone several restorations, the most visible being the Gothic arch placed on the inside, part of the transformations that have left their mark on this 10th-century Mozarabic church.

In addition to shaping the vegetation that surrounds the church, participating children will receive environmental information on flora and will learn how to plant trees.

With this initiative, the Alcoa Foundation confirms its strong commitment to community action and the social volunteerism of its employees. The church reconditioning project, the purpose of this Action Plan, seeks to make area residents aware and sensitive to the need to preserve the region's Romanesque heritage.

Since the start of its activities in Spain in 1998, the Alcoa Foundation has financed numerous environmental education projects. It also earmarks significant resources toward improvements related to health and the condition of disadvantaged groups or those having special needs, whether promoted by not-for-profit organizations or by Alcoa's very own workers.
