Victor Sazonov, Chairman of Samara Regional Duma (Parliament) visited Alcoa SMZ (Samara plant). The agenda included a plant tour and new equipment review in the framework of the large-scale upgrade program the company had led since 2005. Victor Sazonov met with shop-floor workers and personally awarded the most outstanding employees with Regional Duma diplomas.
Alcoa’s investment program was implemented in all core business units of the plant in 2006-2010. Over $350 million was invested in technical upgrade and amenities. The plant was equipped with new machinery made in the USA, Japan, Germany and other Western European plants. This is the largest upgrade of the plant in its history. For the first time ever the upgrade and installation of new equipment was performed simultaneously in all production shops including non-core production units. Most of the projects have been completed. The plant's largest upgrade projects include:
- The Casthouse built two new high-performance casting machines, casting machine #21 was completely upgraded. A new automated cutting line for billets was installed. As a result, the plant has the capacity to satisfy the demand for high-purity billets used in production of can sheet and aerospace parts.
- The Flat-Rolled Products unit completed a reconstruction of hot-mill, commissioned a new high-performance preheat furnace, upgraded controls of cold rolling mill, installed a new can stock slitter, commissioned the world’s most advanced coil coating line. The growth of production capacity will help satisfy Russia’s domestic demand for aluminum packaging. The quality of the plant’s rolled products has reached the quality level of global rolling mills.
- In Extrusions the world’s largest vertical (forging) press with the capacity of 75,000 tons was equipped with new control system and manipulators. The horizontal (extrusion) press with the capacity of 20,000 tons was upgraded. New quenching furnaces were installed and the existing ones were upgraded to comply with the standards of US and European and aerospace, shipbuilding and other industries.
The new equipment installation led to utilization of new technologies thus giving a new impulse to fast development of the plant. At present Alcoa SMZ has vast production capabilities that are equal to those of US and European plants. Victor Sazonov, Chairman of Samara Regional Duma: - The employees of Samara Metallurgical plant (Alcoa SMZ) are proud to work here. I can see great changes in production: the most advanced manufacturing lines are functioning here and they produce high-quality products. The location management treats the social aspects very attentively: they protect the interests of the people, care about their health and safety.
