Alcoa Samara Overview
Samara Metallurgical Plant (SMZ OJSC) In 2005 Samara Metallurgical plant entered the system of Alcoa — the world's largest producer and manager of primary aluminum, fabricated aluminum and alumina. The Samara facility (SMZ) is Russia's largest fabricated aluminum operations. It features cast house, flat rolled products, extrusion, and forging capabilities and serves customers in many markets, including transportation, packaging, and industrial products.

The plant's production and quality control systems have been ISO 9001/9002 certified. The plant's environmental management system has been ISO 14001:1996 certified.

At present all the Samara operations are growing their workload. Flat-roll production volume in the first half of 2006 increased by 13% compared to the first half of 2005.

The major consumers of the plant's products are fabricating facilities and trading companies of the Volga Region, Moscow Region, Ural Region, Central Russia. Leading consuming industries for the plant's products are food and beverage, aerospace, light industry, building and construction.

The plant imports its products to 29 CIS and non-CIS-countries. In 2005 Samara Metallurgical plant was named Best Russian exporter of non-ferrous metals industry.

One source of pride for Samara metallurgists is aluminum can sheet production. The Samara plant is the only Russian facility to manufacture this type of product. Can sheet production is the most technologically advanced of all types of aluminum rolling operations. It is a quality enhancement driver for the plant's products.

In 2004 a number of SMZ employees under the leadership of Mikhail Fedorov, Plant Manager, were awarded with the State Prize of the Russian Federation in Science and Engineering for the development and implementation of scientifically based rolling technology for highly textured aluminum sheet, modernization of rolling operations and organization of a large-scale can sheet production. With Alcoa's acquisition the investments got a new push: in April 2006 the plant launched a new Vai Cosim slitter, the investment plan until 2008 amounts to $70 million for expansion of can sheet production. The location's can sheet production is expected to reach 80,000 tpy in order to satisfy the demand of Russian can producers.

Can Sheets accounts for about a quarter of domestic sales. Large consumers of this type of product are: Novgorodsky meat yard, Cherkizov meat processing plant (Moscow), Astrachan fish factory. The Samara metal is used in production of Russian refrigerators Atlant and Stinol.

Continuous improvements in technology and equipment allowed the Samara plant to master a large-scale production of ribbed extruded panels for shipbuilding, riser pipes for oil extraction from the sea bottom.

The plants fabricated aluminum products are produced in all kinds of aluminum alloys according to Russian and international quality standards.

In 2006-2008 capital investments of $140 million will be spent to improve production efficiency and product quality.

By now the Samara plant has done a great job to implement safety culture at the production facilities. An efficient office and shop workspace program has been put in place. Total productive maintenance of equipment is under implementation now. Samara Metallurgical plant hosts foreign delegations to exchange expertise on a regular basis.

Implementation and development of social programs is one of the primary objectives of the plant's management. The scale of such programs is diverse, as are the social objects under the plant's mentoring.

In 2006 alone the plant presented over 100 PCs to schools #96, 150, 162 and Metallurg Youth Arts Center to teach children. Zhiguly youth club got 100,000 rubles to repair the building. Metallurg libraries at the metallurgists' town received financial support in building repair, telephony, computing and literature purchasing.

Since spring 2006 Alcoa Foundation established Alcoa Scholarships for students and young teachers of the Samara State Aerospace University as part of Alcoa Technical Education Support in Russia (50 scholarships are awarded yearly).

The location is active in the community — it reconstructs yards, sport and play grounds; organizes seasonal cleaning in the Kirov District. Over 200,000 rubles were spent to improve the playground at 80 Metallurg Avenue. Over 200 Alcoa volunteers took part in cleaning the territory of Center for Children with Special Needs at 22 Eniseiskaya Street.

Samara Metallurgical plant participates in health programs. Snezhinka (Snowflake) health train brings kids, teachers and parents to Mastrukovsky lakes yearly. In January and February a ski resort in Krasnoglinsky District hosts family competitions in winter sports.

The charity Health and Mercy foundation is based at the Samara plant, it joins together over 7,000 plant veterans. The Foundation supports veterans in need.

The social and charity programs at the Samara plant cause broad public approval both with the employees as well as with other Samara citizens and regional authorities. All this supports Alcoa's strong positive image among the population as well as regional administrative, political and industrial society.
