Reydarfjordur, Fjardabyggd Alcoa Fjardaál’s aluminum plant is located about 5 km east of the town of Reydarfjordur earlier called Búdareyri, with 1,072inhabitants. The town derives its name from the fjord, Reydarfjordur, Iceland’s third deepest fjord, offering prime conditions for large vessels moving alumina to the smelter and aluminum out of the country. Nearby towns are Eskifjordur with 1,112 inhabitants (15 km from Reydarfjordur) and Neskaupstadur with 1,498 inhabitants (37 km from Reydarfjordur). These towns are all in the municipality Fjardabyggd which the largest one in East Iceland with over 4,900 residents. Other towns in the vicinity are Egilssstadir, that lies in the second largest municipality in East Iceland Fljotsdalsherad, 34 km from Reydarfjordur, and Faskrudsfjordur in Fjarðabyggd, which is 17 km from Reydarfjordur connected with a fairly new road tunnel.
The Alcoa Fjardaál Smelter Site The site chosen for the Alcoa Fjardaál’s smelter lies in between the town of Reydarfjordur (5 km away) and the town of Eskifjordur (10 km) in the municipality of Fjardabyggd. It consists mainly of the former farmland of Hraun, which is mostly flat, stretching from a mountain slope along the coast of Reydarfjordur. Farms in the vicinity of the site include Framnes, Sómastadir, Flateyri and Hólmar. There are residents at Framnes, but presently no farming.
Travelling to Reydarfjordur Reydarfjordur is on the East Coast of Iceland, 688 km away from Reykjavik, the capital. Driving there from Reykjavik would take about 8-9 hours. There are also frequent flights between Reykjavik and Egilsstadir - the second largest town in East- Iceland. The flight takes one hour and the drive between Egilsstadir and Reydarfjordur takes half an hour.
