2005 A Successful Foundation Year in Soest

Thanks to the efforts of Alcoa's Soest employees and the Alcoa Foundation, Alcoa was able to support the Soest community with three ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighborhoods) projects and $32,500 in grants during 2005.

An Alcoa grant of over $25,000 was recently awarded to the “Kinder- und Jugendhilfe Westuffeln.” This charitable organization cares for emotionally burdened children, teenagers and young adults. This grant will help build a new playground that will enrich the play and interaction of the children. Next year, when the playground is finished, “Kinder- und Jugendhilfe Westuffeln” will host an event to honor Alcoa's contributions to the community.

The first two ACTION projects supported by Alcoa's Soest location took place in two local kindergartens. In July, seven employees painted the walls of the Kindergarten “Mullewapp” in Soest. In addition to volunteer hours, the kindergarten also received an ACTION grant of $1,500. Eleven other employees volunteered their time to paint the walls of another kindergarten in the community, the school's first painting in 10 years. This kindergarten received a grant of $3,000.

The last ACTION project took place during Alcoa's Week of Service, October 15-22. Fourteen employees volunteered their time to the Landschafts-Informations-Zentrum Möhnesee (LIZ). This organization teaches children and families about the need for environmental conservancy. In one afternoon the volunteers constructed a wooden information wall and planted hedges around LIZ's headquarters. Along with efforts of the volunteers, Alcoa will make a donation of $3,000 to LIZ. In exchange for their efforts, volunteers and their families received a detailed LIZ tour to learn more about the environment and nature in the Soest area.
