Watching Over China's Birds

Alcoa Bohai (China) volunteers and family members helped measure and band cranes, hawks, owls and other birds and then release them to the wild at Qinhuangdao Beidaihe, the largest wetland in China and haven for bird watchers, as part of its Month of Service activities. Bohai partnered with the Wild Animal SOS Center and the Qinhuangdao Bird Watching Association. (more)
Banding birds is used worldwide for understanding migration patterns and health of different species of birds. Birds are very sensitive to environmental changes; the data collected from this project can help determine how environmental changes affect birds. In addition, environmental protection can be advanced through bird watching feedback. The birds Alcoa Bohai volunteers banded and released had been injured and nursed back to health by the Wild Animal SOS Center.
