Proving once again that they exemplify nothing less than the highest standards for the environment, Alcoa Wheel Products Collingwood (AWPC) has achieved International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 certification, an accomplishment recognized by customers world wide for their commitment to environmental management.
AWPC strives to have the greatest impact on conservation and sustainability, skills today for tomorrow, business and community partnerships, safe and healthy children and families and global education in business, engineering, science and technology.
"We have a sincere interest in the environment from a business, operational, ecological and sustainable development perspective," said Steve Wyndham, environmental supervisor. "The ISO 14001 registration is viewed as an opportunity to reduce our potential impact on the environment and benefit operations. We are deeply proud of our ISO registration achievement and will work diligently to make it an outstanding and lasting success."
Wyndham, whose position requires him to oversee the responsibilities of the management system detailed in the ISO requirements, regards Alcoa as a company that consistently strives for sustainable development and aspires to zero emissions. ISO 14001 is the world's most recognized framework for an Environmental Management System (EMS). ISO 14001 assists organizations to better manage the impact that their daily activities have on the environment and helps to develop consistent environmental management.
"We've provided a stable place of employment in the Collingwood area and a diversification from the tourist industry," said Wyndham. "Being an Alcoa facility comes with a high profile for health and safety for employees and a strong regard for the environment. Customers require these standards and so do we. Our wheels are completely recyclable and we hope that programs like ISO continue. It's my hope that suppliers will adopt a stewardship that informs customers on how to reuse and recycle their products properly as opposed to throwing materials out."
Along with their ISO 14001 registration, which they were recommended for in Dec 2002 and achieved in Feb 2003, AWPC have a number of other notable accolades as well. They achieved ISO 9002 in 1994, QS 9000 registration in June 1996, re-registration in Dec 2002, Ford Q1 Preferred Quality Award 1997, '98, '99, 2000, Chrysler Gold Pentastar Award 1995, '96, '97.
The 300,000 square foot facility, built on 96 acres, employs over 400 permanent personnel. They provide aluminum automotive wheels for trucks and cars to General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. Alcoa has sister plants within the wheel division in the U.S. as well as Venezuela and Italy.
