Alcoa started operating in Tubarão, in the south of Santa Catarina State, in 1986, when it acquired ALUSUD, Alumínios do Sul S/A, that was involved in the casting, manufacture and surface finishing of aluminum profiles. Since then it has been supplying products for civil construction and the furniture, automobile and metal and mechanical industries in the extrusion and anodizing sectors.
In Tubarão, Alcoa adopts consistent policies in the health, safety, environment and quality areas, with the on-going participation of its employees in the continuous improvement of its manufacturing processes through sustainable directives. In October 2007 the unit beat its production record when it manufactured an historical volume of 2,100 tons of extruded aluminum profiles, without incident.
Tubarão, known as the “Blue City” is in a privileged location, 130 km from the state capital, Florianopolis. It is the second largest city in the south of the state and an important regional trade center. Its main economic activities are linked to trade, service provision, agriculture and livestock farming; the ceramics sector is also important locally, with several companies located in the region. |
