The water used in the Tubarão plant comes from a natural reserve located three kilometers away. The location (where the water source is) covers almost 2 hectares, of which 85% is of native forest. Alcoa purchased the 100,000 sq m. and has prepared an environmental education model that will be implemented shortly. In addition, in April 2007 the unit acquired a preservation area that borders on the Company’s premises in the municipality. The Tubarão Environmental Park covers 10 hectares and its 85% of native forest is home to 176 different botanical species.
The unit controls the generation of solid waste and the preservation of the quality of liquid emissions, especially how it discards the final liquid effluent from the anodizing process. The Company offers employees activities and training related to preventing work and pollution incidents, as well as activities directed at the well-being of the local community.
