Alumar the Maranhão Aluminum Consortium, is one of the largest complexes in the world for the production of primary aluminum and alumina. Inaugurated in July, 1984 it is formed by Alcoa, Alcan and BHP Billiton and plays an important socio-economic role in Maranhão.
Alumar structures its business model on the concept of sustainability and incorporates criteria in its day-to-day operations that ensure economic success, environmental excellence and social responsibility. One of the pillars of this model is the Alcoa Business System (ABS), which seeks continuous improvement in the quality of the production system, a reduction in costs, a reduction in production time and improvements in health, safety and environment in the work-place.
Some 90% of the Consortium’s employees are from Maranhão, there are hundreds of local suppliers and the plant’s production has been increasing every year. In 2007 the Smelting area reached a record production figure of 450,000 tons of aluminum and the Refinery produced approximately 1.5 million tons of alumina. After conclusion of the Refinery expansion work, which started in 2007 and should be finished in 2008, alumina production will reach 3.5 million tons a year.
Alumar’s environmental management system has been certified for seven years by the ISO14001 Norms. It is fully compatible with the global market and all environmental management practices are integrated with its operating practices.
It is because of its excellent performance in the environmental area that ALUMAR has been receiving national and international recognition. In 2007, for the fourth consecutive year, the Consortium received the “Brazilian Environmental Benchmarking” Prize, for the Company’s responsible and competitive attitude.
Refinery expansion The Refinery Expansion Project, which started in January 2007, will expand the Consortium’s alumina production from 1.5 million to 3.5 million tons a year. This is the biggest expansion project of an alumina refinery so far carried out anywhere in the world and the total investment will be R$ 4.1 billion. There are currently more than 9,000 people working on the expansion work, 80% of whom are from Maranahão and 20% from communities surrounding the plant.
As a result of the partnership signed between Alumar and SEMA (Maranhão State Department of the Environment and Natural Resources), two natural green areas of São Luís are being preserved with resources coming from the Refinery Expansion Project. The Itapiracó Reserve will be the first green area in the Maranhão capital and will have an infrastructure suitable for receiving visitors; and the 126 hectare Rangedor Ecological Station which, in addition to support for conservation of its biodiversity, will also include a newly constructed Environmental Education Center, a multimedia library, workshops open to the public and laboratories for environmental analysis.
Quality of life and training and development To help improve the quality of life of those communities that are Alumar’s neighbors, the Expansion Project is also developing social programs that always prioritize sustainable development. In a partnership with SENAI, the program has formed 400 multifunctional helpers with the aim of training and developing young people and thus increasing their chances of arranging employment. Thanks to the program, the chances of these people successfully competing for employment vacancies have increased and workers from neighboring communities have become more competitive.
Safety Program on the BR 135 Highway This program aims to reduce the number of accidents on the highway through education and by promoting improvements in traffic engineering and supervision. |
