Consórcio Alumar - São Luís
Overview
Corporate citizenship
Since the start of its operation and in a pioneering way Alumar has been supporting projects and institutions, using its own resources and those of the Alcoa Foundation, the Alcoa Institute and BHP Billiton. These resources benefit thousands of people in the areas of education, health, culture, the environment and sustainable development. In 2007 the investment passed the R$ 7 million mark, one of the largest amounts donated in the Consortium’s history.

Alumar’s employees are also involved with volunteer activities and projects that transfer knowledge, reinforce the concept of citizenship and promote quality of life in the communities.

The integration between the undertaking and those who work in it results in everyone being encouraged to be socially responsible and to be aware of the importance of everybody participating.

Alumar’s efforts to behave in a socially responsible and citizen-like manner, by acting in projects that benefit the population, have received recognition by the São Luís City Administration, which awarded the Consortium its “Corporate Friend of the City” trophy

  • Total investment in 2007: R$ 7 million
  • Total number of people who benefited between 2001/2007: more than 550,000

A commitment to local communities
In 2007 all Alumar’s social actions were carried out in communities that are situated close to the plant. Furthermore, the World Month of Community Service program promoted four actions in different neighboring communities. These are just some of the pieces of work developed by Alumar in surrounding communities:

“Transform Project” Prize
This aims to encourage communities surrounding Alumar to develop sustainable community projects. It was launched during the World Month of Community Service and the winning project receives from the Alcoa Institute and from the Alcoa Foundation the funds necessary to make it viable.

In 2007 the projects that won the Transform Project Prize were:

  • Rio Grande community – a project for building the Rio Grande Community Center, which will offer professional training courses to the community’s young people and adults.
  • Vila Maranhão community – Voices of Tomorrow Project (ACONJAVIMA), the objective of which is to promote the teaching of the playing of musical instruments among young people.

Inauguration of the Waste Sorting Center
In November Alumar’s Refinery Expansion Project inaugurated its Waste Sorting Center. The Center is operated exclusively by women who come from communities surrounding Alumar and is a new watershed as far as the culture of recycling for the project’s neighboring population is concerned.

Introduction of the Reading Corner
In October 2007, in order to encourage the reading habit, employees of Alumar and of the Refinery Expansion Project inaugurated the “Reading Corner”, in the Gomes de Sousa Basic Education Unit in Taim, in the rural destrict of São Luís.
