Alcoa's 2011 Sustainability Report
Poços de Caldas (MG)

The plant in Poços de Caldas (MG), which was founded in 1965, was Alcoa’s first unit in Brazil; at the time it was called Alcominas. Activities started in 1970 and 10 years later it became known as Alcoa Alumínio S.A.

In its four integrated production units – mining, refining, smelting and the manufacture of aluminum powder – the company produces calcined and hydrated aluminas, liquid metal, billets, ingots and aluminum powder, which Alcoa in Latin America only makes in Brazil.

Around 52% of the alumina made is used in producing the metal. The other 48%, in the form of aluminum hydroxide and alumina, is distributed to aluminum sulfate, paper, titanium dioxide, lens and metal polishing, sodium aluminate and flame retardant industries and to manufacturers of glass, pigments and refractory, ceramic, abrasive and electro-fusion products and to other segments. The metal is sold both in Brazil and internationally.

Aluminum powder (for the refractory, metallurgy and chemical sectors) is sold in the domestic market and also exported to Japan, Europe, the United States and the Mercosur. The unit also produces fine aluminum powder, which is used in the manufacture of pigments for the automotive and electronic equipment industries.

In 2005, due to its strategic location, qualified labor force and competitive values, Poços de Caldas received yet another Alcoa business unit: GBS (Global Business Services), which centralizes the company’s administrative and financial services in a single structure.
