The Poços de Caldas (Minas Gerais) plant was founded in 1965 under the name Alcominas. It was Alcoa’s first unit in Brazil. Operations started in 1970; in 1980, its name was changed to Alcoa Alumínio S.A.
Poços de Caldas is capable of producing calcinated and hydrated alumina, molten metal, billets, ingots and aluminum powder in its four integrated production units (mining, refinery, smelting and aluminum powder plant).
Around 52% of the alumina made is used for producing the metal, while the other 48%, in the form of hydrate and alumina, is sent to various industries and business segments, among which are those dealing with aluminum sulfate, paper, titanium dioxide, lens and metal polishing, sodium aluminates, flame retardants, glass manufacture, pigments, refractory products, ceramics, abrasives and electrofusion. The metal is sold in both the Brazilian and international markets.
Aluminum powder (used in the refractory, metallurgy and chemical sectors) is sold domestically and also exported to Japan, Europe, the United States and Mercosur. The unit can also produce fine aluminum powder, used in the manufacture of pigments for the automobile industry and for electronic equipment. |
