Alcoa Alumínio S.A. - Juruti
Overview
Respect for the environment

In Juruti (Para) Alcoa values and encourages environmental projects. One of these is the Program for Supporting Conservation of the Biodiversity of the Amazon, which was launched in 2007. Managed by an environmental organization, Conservation International (CI-Brasil), the Alcoa Foundation and Alcoa in Brasil, the Program will last for five years and receive R$ 2 million from partner institutions. The main objective is to collaborate by setting up conservation units in this region, a strategy indicated as being the most efficient way of protecting biodiversity and restricting deforestation in areas where there is a major social and economic dynamic, according to many of the benchmark studies consulted.

The program is open to contributions from other institutions. It is intended to create a fund that will be worth an estimated R$ 60 million by 2012 for protecting and making feasible the functioning of conservation units in the region, where the National Amazon Park is located, which has also received investments from this program. The initiative has been recognized by the Ministry of the Environment, via the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Renewable Resources (IBAMA) and by the Para State Department of the Environment (SEMA).

The Company has established a global target of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% below the 1990 level by 2010. This objective was reached in 2003, seven years early according to the original timetable and this reduction has been maintained despite the continuous growth in production. In Brazil, Alcoa has adhered to the Climate Defense Action Pact, an agreement that aims to limit and halt global warming caused by greenhouse gases.

Conservation of natural resources and biodiversity and the environmental management of waste, effluents and emissions are two strategic themes for the Company and they are constantly evolving, showing Alcoa’s commitment to current and future generations.
