Alcoa Alumínio S.A. - Juruti
Overview
Community

In Juruti, Alcoa works in constant partnership with the community, social organizations and local public authorities. Since the mining project activities started at the end of 2005, Alcoa has consistently worked to listen to the local people and to have an open dialogue with their representatives in order to prepare and implement a sustainable development agenda in the Para municipality and the region. Before the project began, various preliminary meetings and public hearings were held with community leaders, public and private institutions and other stakeholders in Juruti, Santarém and Belém. Some 6,000 people attended the public hearing in Juruti.

After much research and a series of discussions with a multidisciplinary team, including field research and the gathering of local and regional information, the Sustainable Juruti Project was prepared by GVCes (Getulio Vargas Foundation’s Center for Sustainability Studies), by FUNBIO (Brazilian Fund for Biodiversity) and by Alcoa. The idea behind this project is to help with the three aspects of the sustainability tripod that aim for regional development: respect for the environment, social responsibility and economic success. Having identified this model as one of the aspirations of the Juruti community itself, its implementation is a voluntary initiative by Alcoa and one that complements the on-going actions arising from the legal requirements for setting up the Juruti Mine (Environmental Control plans and the Collective Compensation Matrix of the Socó I Settlement) and Alcoa’s voluntary actions (Positive Agenda). These are all being made feasible by socio-environmental investments of several millions of reais and by the unwavering dedication of Alcoans to the citizens of Juruti.

The Project is already working successfully. In addition to the Sustainability Indicator System and the Sustainable Juruti Fund (FUNJUS), which has already had its first functioning proposal presented, the Project also includes the Sustainable Juruti Council (CONJUS), which is a public arena for dialogue between the various parties that are interested in local development.
