Alcoa Alumínio S.A. - Itapissuma
Overview
Community
Since it set up in Itapissuma (Pernamubuco) Alcoa has already developed more than 300 activities and projects aimed at improving the living standards and well-being of the communities with which it has most active contact. Itapissuma, Igarassu, Paulista, Recife and Olinda are just some of the towns in the region where Alcoa operates that have already benefited from Company projects.

Between 2003 and 2006 the Itapissuma unit invested more than US$ 854,000 in projects, ACTIONs and the BRAVO! and BRAVO!Brasil programs, with support from the Alcoa Institute and the Alcoa Foundation. In this same period more than 220,000 people and 160 entities benefited and 106,000 hours were dedicated to community work.

The Shekiná Nursery, located in Olinda (Pernambuco) was one of the entities that benefited. The crèche looks after 60 needy children, who receive full support and assistance from the employees. In addition to helping the children the nursery offers professional training courses and psychological guidance for the children's parents. Despite the efforts of the team the place used to suffer on a daily basis with the problem of a lack of resources for developing new projects. Via the BRAVO! program and the volunteer activities of Alcoa employees from Itapissuma, it was possible to raise the funds needed for buying premises for the crèche, thereby generating benefits for the region's needy community.

The walkway through the mangrove swamp in the Peixe Boi [manatee] Center in Itamaracá, the Carpentry School in Itapissuma, the Boy Jesus Charitable Nursery in Recife and the school in Paulista are just some of the many examples of initiatives that receive the support and constant attention of the Company, via the Alcoa Institute and the Alcoa Foundation, in addition to the permanent involvement of its employee volunteers.
