Celebrating the Environment

Alcoa locations in Western Australia celebrated World Environment Day June 5 by planting thousands of new native trees and shrubs to soak up the rain and help clean the atmosphere as part of Alcoa's Ten Million Trees program.

Alcoa of Australia Environment and Sustainable Development Manager Tim McAuliffe said over 8,300 seedlings were distributed over two days to employees at each of Alcoa's alumina refineries, bauxite mines, ports and offices in WA. Employees were asked to each take home and plant two seedlings provided by Alcoa. Trays of seedlings were also donated to the Waroona and Harvey Shire Councils and local schools. The native seedlings – ranging from bottlebrush and gum trees to kangaroo paws, nut bush and other shrubs – are grown at Alcoa's Marrinup nursery near Dwellingup. Employees at the Pinjarra refinery were also given pots of vermicast, a natural fertilizer produced at Alcoa's Pinjarra worm farm, to give their plants an extra
