Portland Aluminium will play host to 400 local primary school students this week for a day of ecological learning and fun to celebrate World Environment Day 2005.

Grade 3 – 6 students from 10 local primary schools will swap the classroom for Portland Aluminium’s education centre at Baxter House on Thursday for a day of environmental education.
Portland Aluminium, together with 15 diverse community partners, will run a range of exciting activities including environmental arts and crafts, “animal antics”, interactive displays, “critters, creeks and catchments” and bus tours of the smelter’s material recovery facility, to demonstrate the way in which industry can work in harmony with nature.
All participants will also receive a healthy lunch in “waste wise” packaging to raise awareness about the importance of reducing waste and recycling.
Portland Aluminium operations manager John Osborne said that in addition to being an enjoyable day out, participating students would learn more about how to respect and care for the environment.
“Portland Aluminium is committed to looking after the environment in which we live and work,” Mr Osborne said.
“We are proud of our unique Smelter In the Park with its 500 hectares of heathland and wetland flora and fauna habitat, on-site nursery, working farm and material recycling facility.
“This is a great opportunity to share our knowledge and that of our valuable community partners with the youngest members of our community. At Portland Aluminium sustainability is part of our every day life and we are dedicated to protecting and enhancing our environment for their future.”
“I hope all participants have a fantastic day,” Mr Osborne added.
Community partners helping the children to celebrate on the day will be the Glenelg Hopkins CMA, Department of Sustainability and Environment, Parks Victoria, Friends of the Great South West Walk, RSPCA, DPI Fisheries, Portland Coast Water, Greening Australia, Portland Field Naturalists, Portland Cliffs Landcare Group, Coast Care/Coast Action, Waste Reduction Group, Glenelg Shire and the Portland Lions Club.
The day’s activities begin at 9.30am with lunch at 12.30pm. Parents and friends are welcome to join in the festivities.
