Alcoa was granted a lease of 13 acres (3.4 hectares) of land at Pt. Tembladora (Latitude 10o 40 North, Longitude 61o 35 West) in August 1947 to construct a bauxite transfer station. Construction work began on Tembladora Transfer Station in January 1948. The transfer station began service, transshipping bauxite from Suriname in February 1950. The station was essentially built because of draft restrictions in the Suriname River. Today, there are 21 Alcoans employed at the station.
Between 1969 and 1983, the station handled both bauxite and alumina. From November 1983 to the present time, the station handles alumina only. The transfer station loads out an average of 525,000 metric tons of Suralcos alumina per year. In June 2003, Tembladora Transfer Station received ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certification. |
