Badin is located on the Yadkin River in northeastern Stanly County, in the south central section of North Carolina. Badin is an incorporated community with a population of approximately 1800. Alcoa began producing Aluminum at Badin in August 1916 after purchasing and completing the holdings of a French combine which had started work on a smelter.
Badin Works produces Primary Aluminum by an electrolytic process developed by Charles Martin Hall in 1886. Electricity is supplied by Yadkin, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alcoa which operates generating facilities at four dams along a 38-mile stretch of the Yadkin River. These dams are High Rock, Tuckertown, Narrows and Falls. Yadkin, Inc. supplies approximately 54% of Badin Works' energy (when at full capacity). Additional power purchases are made from area utilities under long-term contracts.
Badin Works is located on approximately 123 acres of land and consists of two potlines, an electrode plant which produces anodes and cathodes, casting facilities, a machine shop and various offices and utility buildings.
During normal production, approximately 70% of the metal produced at Badin is shipped in either molten form or in special forms including coils, particle or high purity, directly to customers or other business units for further processing. The remainder of the metal is shopped in ingot form to the metal market.
Currently, aluminum production at Badin is curtailed. The electrode plant is in operation.
