Fifty Jamalco volunteers joined forces on Saturday, February 21 to construct a house for Lionel Town senior citizen, Aman Clarke whose house was destroyed by Tropical Storm Gustav in 2008. The fifty Jamalco employees from the Clarification Department constructed a ply-board house from foundation to roof in just one day.

They all returned to the house for the second work day on February 28 to add the finishing touches to paint, create a refined foundation, smoother flooring a front and back step and to furnish the 14’ x12’ house. The Security Department, through the instrumentality of Commander Roger Powell, donated a divan bed with sheets; Food for the Poor gave a marble table and matching chest of drawers; and the Clarification department further contributed their funds to purchase the paint and acquire personal effects, toiletries and curtains. More importantly, however, the house which was to become “Home Sweet Home†for Mr. Clarke was blessed by Maurice Robinson, Clarification Superintendent and officially handed over and opened by Alicia Marshalleck, Project Coordinator and Donovan Rhoden, Shift Supervisor. In a brief handing over ceremony Maurice Robinson explained that the Clarification group was committed to the project and had sacrificed time, effort and energy and pooled their funds to support a worthy cause. In his response Mr. Clarke an 84 year old former Bicycle Mechanic, Welder and Blacksmith who still lives in the ruins of the old house said that he was grateful to the volunteers for the help given and expressed appreciation to Jamalco, noting that “I would like to see them everydayâ€. Coordinator of the project, Chemical Engineer Alicia Marshalleck, said that the Clarification Department “always wanted to do something as a team†and so when the need was brought to their attention, they quickly embraced the project. Clarification Superintendent Maurice Robinson commended the group for their efforts and for responding to the company’s plea for increased volunteerism by spearheading such a meaningful community outreach project.
