Commissioner of Police calls for Open Communication at the Workplace

Commissioner of Police, Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin is urging open communication between employers and employees as a way to ensure business success. He was speaking at Jamalco’s Long Service Awards ceremony held at the Terra Nova Hotel, Kingston recently.

Commissioner Lewin noted that trust is needed at the workplace and “this requires open, full and frank communication.”  This will lead to high performance and production at the workplace, he added, “and if this does not happen you will be out of a job.”

He also reminded the awardees and their guests that service does not mean servitude, pointing to the biblical injunction “he who is greatest among you is your servant.” He called for management and employees to “work for each other because if the plant fails you will both crash and burn.”

The Commissioner commended Jamalco, saying the company must be doing something right to retain employees for upwards of 35 years.  Forty Four employees were honoured at the ceremony for between 10 and 35 years of service. Ten persons were honoured for 35 years; five for 30 years; four for 25 years; 13 for 20 years; nine for 15 years and one for 10 years.

Jamalco’s Managing Director Jerome Maxwell also lauded the employees for their contribution to the organisation, noting that they have given service of over 1000 years to build the bauxite/alumina company.  He also thanked the awardees’ spouses and families for the critical role they played in ensuring that the employees made a “meaningful and valuable contribution to Jamalco and Jamaica.”

Mr. Peter Millingen, the new Chairman of Clarendon Alumina Partners (CAP), the company through which the Jamaican government owns some 45% of the Clarendon based company, also greeted the awardees. He expressed great respect for the jobs they perform having recently visited Jamalco’s mining and refining operations in Manchester and Clarendon.

Mr. Michael Lattibeaudiere, Chief Union delegate for the Union of Technical and Supervisory personnel (UTASP) also brought greetings, advising his coworkers that the milestones should be viewed as opportunities to take stock of the past and look ahead to the future.

Fifteen year awardee Claudette Harris introduced the keynote speaker while Thirty year awardee Joshua Richardson gave the vote of thanks.
