Jamalco, JFLL Launch Documentation Skills Programme in the Mining Communities

The Alcoa Foundation has provided US$110,000 to fund the project, launched on Thursday, February 26 at the Harmons All Age School, Manchester, that will train 90 persons per year.

The Jamaican Foundation for Lifelong Learning is implementing the programme in Mocho, Clarendon, a former Jamalco mining area and in Mt. Oliphant and Harmons, Manchester, in which Jamalco is now mining.  The bauxite/alumina company facilitated the grant to the JFLL and will assist with its implementation by offering guidance and support to ensure its success.

Speaking at the launch, Jamalco’s Manager, Corporate Services and Government Affairs Leo Lambert said the philosophy of sustainable development guided the development of this and other community development programmes that Jamalco is spearheading.   He urged the participants to make full use of the training as “the skills gained will equip you to conquer new horizons.” He added that the participants will gain a foundation that can “propel them to acquire skills training or to access higher academic learning that will allow you to make a giant leap to better your lives.”

JFFL Workplace Coordinator Miranda Sutherland noted that on completing the programme participants will be able to access other JFLL training such as the High School Equivalency Programme.  She explained that some 300 persons have already taken diagnostic tests and the first batch of 90 persons is being selected and will begin classes this month.

In giving the vote of thanks, Chairman of the Harmons Valley Community Council Craigh Pitter said “this is the best thing that has happened in the valley and we have our part to play in making it a success.”

Participants have been identified in Mocho, Clarendon and Harmons, Mount Oliphant, Perrins, Manningsfield, Rhoomes Town and Farm in South Manchester.  The JFFL has also identified and began training teachers from these communities to offer the classes.
