Three institutions in Clarendon recently received cheques totaling US$9,000 from the Alcoa Foundation to support their development.

The cheques for US$3,000 each were presented in recognition of the participation of Jamalco employees in ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighbourhoods) community projects. Jamalco’s Capital Projects Manager Richard Hall presented the cheque for US$3000 to the One Accord Basic School in Savannah Cross to assist in completing the school building. Mr. Hall noted the company’s continued support for education and explained that a team of Jamalco volunteers had been formed to provide technical assistance to the school. He however, urged the school’s PTA, the church and community to get involved in the partnership. “We are all going to get involved in raising more money so that we can have a building that we can be proud of and a structure that is conducive to learning,” he said while congratulating the teachers for their effort in starting the building and for playing a critical role in the development of the children. The school has three teachers and 64 children on role who are now having classes in the local church. Chairman of the School Board, Shirley Taylor thanked the Alcoa Foundation and Jamalco for their contribution and pledged the support of the church “You lend your hands and we lend ours” she said. The Tollgate Football Club collected its grant from Jamalco’s Mine Superintendent Roger Blair, at the Tollgate Community Centre. The grant recognizes the contribution of over ten Jamalco volunteers who are helping the community to refurbish the centre. Mr. Blair urged the community to take care of the facility and to use it for the improvement of the football club. In accepting the cheque, Club President Rosemarie Wallace expressed deep appreciation for the gift and challenged the club members and the wider community to volunteer their time and skills to complete the project as “there is still much more work to be done.” The funds will help to complete refurbishing work which Jamalco spear-headed on Labour Day, 2008. At the Kemps Hill High School the US$3,000 grant will be used to complete the construction of a classroom. A team of at least ten Jamalco volunteers whose children attend Kemps Hill High will work with other members of the school community to paint a new classroom block at the school. The cheque was presented to the school by member of Jamalco’s Corporate Services team Pamela White during school devotion. Head Boy Sonneil Gustard who received the gift thanked Jamalco on behalf of the school, while Principal Leebert Wright said the gift will allow the school’s building project to move closer to completion. ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighborhoods) recognizes the team efforts of at least 10 Alcoa (including Jamalco) employees who spend a minimum of four hours on a community service project for a local nonprofit organization. In recognition of the team's effort, Alcoa through the Alcoa Foundation, makes a contribution of either $1,500 or $3,000, depending on the size of the team, to the nonprofit organization.
