Jamalco Receives Corporate Social Responsibility Award

Jamalco has received the Jamaica Employers Federation (JEF) Private Sector Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award in recognition of the company’s numerous, ongoing initiatives to promote community development.

The award was presented at a breakfast meeting on Tuesday, July 22 at the Knutsford Hotel in Kingston.

Jamalco was one of 19 companies that received this honour from the JEF, following a 2007 survey which identified the extent to which Jamaican companies practice Corporate Social Responsibility.  JEF also presented the survey results and launched the resulting publication at the ceremony.

Corporate Social Responsibility as defined by the International Organization of Employers (IOE), is “the initiatives by companies voluntarily integrating social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interactions with their stakeholders”.

Minister of Labour and Social Security Hon. Pearnel Charles who spoke at the awards ceremony, launched a Special Employment and Training Youth programme that will see some 10,000 young people being apprenticed by private sector firms leading to certification by the HEART Trust NTA.

Guest speaker at the function, the IOE’s Regional Vice President Ms. Ronnie Goldberg, commended the Jamaican companies on their efforts in implementing CSR initiatives while urging them to collaborate with the state and Non-government organizations in carrying out the CSR programmes.
