Jamalco Breaks Alumina Record Again

Just five months after Jamalco loaded its largest shipment of alumina at Rocky Point, the company is again boasting that it has broken that record.

The record was smashed when 42,373 metric tonnes of alumina was loaded on the Lowlands Opal between November 12 and 16. The Lowlands Opal which is the largest alumina ship ever loaded at the facility is owned by Alcoa and has the capacity to hold up to 50,000 tonnes. The product is destined for Becancour, Canada and has a Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) of 100%.
This record breaking shipment represents 4% more than the last biggest shipment which occurred in early June this year when 40,600 MT was loaded on the Annie Selmer. The third highest shipment sailed in May 2004 when 38,819 MT was loaded on the Frontier Star. In January 2005, the company shipped 38,711 MT, the fourth largest shipment ever.
Refinery Manager Antonio Melo is extremely pleased with the quality of the alumina shipped noting that “this was an excellent shipment!” The quality was great and in keeping with our new targets. This is what is going to help us to change our reputation among our customers,” he said. He is also challenging the team to continue improving the product and to make quality their hallmark.
Port, Raw Materials and Mines Superintendent Calbert Hanson commended the team for the excellent job they did and for successfully executing the ship loading effort without any injuries. “Everyone was enthusiastic and it is good to see the results,” he stated. Calbert added that there is a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment among the Port Team.
