Jamalco Wins Human Resource Focus Award

For the first time ever, Jamalco won a National Quality Award (NQA) for Human Resource Focus in the Manufacturing Sector from the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce and the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ). The award was presented at a special function at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston recently.

The award followed an intense audit of the Refinery conducted by the BSJ in July in which the company was evaluated on the following areas: Organizational focus, HR Focus, Process Management, Customer focus and Business Results. Jamalco is the first bauxite company to have achieved this award.

Among the areas in Human Resources that were examined are our employee recognition system, Training Programme (Employee training and career development), identification of organizational needs associated with employee, workplace and environmental safety, monitoring of turnover rate, system for the provision of incentives and rewards and procedure for the provision of recreation and cultural activities.

Human Resources Manager Christopher Buckmaster said his department is humbled by the award. “We are however pleased to have won the award as it validates some of the changes we are trying to make in terms of HR Processes. This is the first year that Jamalco has entered the competition and to take home the Human Resource Focus award means that we are doing something right as it relates to our people.” Mr. Buckmaster added that the award also serves as an encouragement for his department to continue providing the best HR services.

Established in 2004, the NQA Scheme was devised by the Ministry of Industry and the BSJ to recognize excellence in business while promoting the international competitiveness of Jamaican products and services.

The programme, which is the first of its kind in Jamaica, also seeks to “recognize and reward local companies that demonstrate the application of high standards and quality systems in both the production of goods and delivery of service.”

The awards cover both the Manufacturing and Service Sectors enveloping several local industries including finance, hospitality and professional services, among others.
