International Literacy Day at New Bowens Basic and Campbell’s Castle All Age Schools

Students at the Campbell’s Castle All Age School in south Manchester and at the New Bowens Basic School in Hayes, Clarendon enjoyed a special treat when several Jamalco employees visited and read to them to commemorate International Literacy Day (Wednesday Sept. 8).

At New Bowens Basic School seven team members read stories to the twenty-one 2-5 year old students and used hand puppets to dramatizing an Anancy story from the JIS publication “A Fi Wi Heritage” and from the book “Airport” by Byron Barton.

In addition, the Manager of QUASAR, a Jamalco Alliance Partner Gobind Dansinghani, explained to the little ones that World Literacy Day for some children in Pakistan was a sad day as 2 million of them were unable to attend school due to the heavy flood rains.

“They cannot move around and get to and from school like you” he said to the students, some of whom were attending school for the first time. “You are blessed” he added.

At Campbell’s Castle All Age located close to the company’s mining operations, team members read two books – “My Brain is My Boss” and “I Can, We Can” - to Grades  1 and 2 students respectively.

Pamela White, Community Relations Administrator at Jamalco explained that the visits fell under the company’s “Jamalco in Schools Programme” which seeks to strengthen the relationship between the company and members of its host communities and also educate students about the company’s operations.  The students at new Bowens also received educational packages from Jamalco.

Acting Principal at New Bowens, Heather Reid thanked the team for their support on International Literacy Day and for their ongoing assistance in developing the school’s infrastructure.  Jamalco volunteers over the past year have refurbished the classroom, the kitchen, built outdoor benches and constructed stands for a water tank.  She asked the team to continue its partnership with the institution and saw the gesture as a welcomed “Back-To-School” effort.
