Jamalco Hands Over Irrigation Facilities to NIC

Some two hundred residents and farmers from McGilchrist Palm , Clarendon are set to benefit from an improved source of irrigation water following Jamalco’s handing over of two water pumping stations to the National Irrigation Commission (NIC) at the NIC’s head office in Kingston recently.

Jamalco's Lands Superintendent Evon Williams presented the keys for the McGilchrist Palm pumping station and the Toll Gate re-lift station, to the NIC's Cheif Executive Officer Stanley Rampair.  Jamalco had constructed the facilities and installed equipment in 2003 as part of its development of the McGilchrist Palm sub-division for the resettlement of persons whose lands were being mined for bauxite. McGilchrist Palm comprises a mix of 5 acre farming and residential lots. The two stations are part of the NIC’s Mid-Clarendon Irrigation System and will also allow for improved service to farms in the Prospect community.

Mr. Williams, on presenting the keys, noted that Jamalco has “rehabilitated and energized the well at Toll Gate and the system includes a distribution network connecting the farms in McGilchrist Palm to the system.”  He explained that Jamalco has “started consultations with the farmers and residents informing them of the need to register with the NIC to regularize their payment for the service.”

Mr. Rampair said the NIC and Jamalco have a longstanding partnership in providing irrigation water to farmers in this section of Clarendon.  The NIC is also partnering with the Rural Agricultural Development Agency (RADA) to assist the farmers to produce their crops.
