Jamalco’s Managing Director Jerome Maxwell disclosed that the company spent some $360,000 on two health projects for Labour Day 2009 within the company’s operating areas in Clarendon at the Lionel Town Hospital and in Manchester at the Harmons Health Centre.

Mr. Maxwell was one of 50 volunteers who participated in the Labour Day effort to improve the male ward, paint the walkway linking the administrative offices with the wards and give a facelift to sections of the Lionel Town Hospital on Labour Day (May 25). Commenting on the level of volunteerism among Jamalco team members and local contractors the Managing Director said that “One of the hallmarks of Jamalco is our volunteer spirit, not only in October which represents a special month of voluntary community service, but Labour Day is another opportunity for the company’s workforce to interact with the community.†He further added that “One of the values of Jamalco in achieving sustainability is to give back to our communities and we are mindful that we are here because they allow us to be here.†Members of the Leo Club of Clarendon, Cadets from the Vere Technical High School who are members of the newly formed Second Engineer Squadron based at the school, Jamalco Community Council members from the refinery and port areas also helped to improve the facility. Local contractors contributed cash and material towards the health project as most of them have used the facility and wanted to show their appreciation for the service rendered. Among the contractors making contributions were Cousins Constructions; K & D Haulage; Street-Link; Cari-Pro; A & M and C & R Webster. At a Pre-Labour Day workday on May 15 volunteers replaced damaged sections of the roof along the corridor with new lumber and zinc and began painting the walkway.
