Jamalco hosted a workshop for young farmers being trained in greenhouse technology at the Mocho Green House Training Center, Mount Airy, on Friday, April 24, as part of its Farmers Month activities. The company’s Agricultural Officer, Daniel Miller, spoke to the young farmers about the management of weeds and shared different techniques and strategies to control weeds while growing crops successfully.

He explained that “weeds rob plants of nutrients and water, acts as a host that encourages pests and disease and should be eliminated for healthy plant growth.†He also gave the trainees tips for proper irrigation and explained how to rid soil of weeds using chemicals that they should use wisely and sparingly. The Agricultural Officer also discussed with the trainees mulching techniques and proper sanitation of equipment used to treat weeds in the field. He stressed that in all cases proper protective gears must be worn. Lecturer, Ebony Park HEART/NTA, Anthony Trout, thanked Jamalco for taking the time to educate the trainee farmers about weed management. The appreciation was seen in the smiles and warmth of the trainees as they examined the weed Lionstail, sometimes used in dried floral arrangements. Public and Community Relations Administrator, Pamela White, explained that the “Jamalco in Schools Programme is being implemented by Jamalco to educate students about the Bauxite/Alumina Industry. “Imparting knowledge and skills with the help of our employees is one of the many ways in which Jamalco gives back to the Community.†she added.
