Jamalco Organizes Oral Health Presentation

Three hundred and ninety six (396) students from the Pratville Primary and Infant School in South Manchester benefited from a presentation on Oral Hygiene on October 14.  The presentation was organized by bauxite/alumina company Jamalco during Oral Health Month as part of the company’s Jamalco in Schools programme.

Two Dental Health practitioners from the Manchester Health Department engaged the children in a lively presentation designed to teach them good oral hygiene practices.  Dental Assistant Beulah Haughton-Thompson, with the assistance of some students, demonstrated the correct way to brush their teeth while explaining how to care for their teeth and gums so that they will last a lifetime.
At the end of the presentation, Principal Valda Buckle said that the talk was comprehensive and the students had benefitted based on the energy displayed during their responses to questions.
Grade 2 student Kerry-Ann Wright said thanks to the presenters on behalf of her classmates. “Thanks for educating us about how to care for our teeth; we will surely have healthy teeth and gums,” she said.
At the end of the session Jamalco’s Community Relations Officer Natalee Irving, presented care packages secured from Colgate Palmolive Company to each student and teacher.
The Jamalco in Schools programme aims to create a better understanding of how the bauxite/alumina industry works and contributes to national development and to generally enrich and supplement the education of students at schools located in the company’s operating areas.
