Over 200 students from the primary to the tertiary level of the education system are the beneficiaries of approximately J$1.8 million dollars in education assistance from Jamalco.

The students, all from the bauxite/ alumina company’s operating areas in Clarendon and Manchester, received varied assistance including school books and bursaries as they begin the 2009/2010 academic year. As part of the programme Jamalco also continued its provision of scholarships to 14 students from its operating areas who were selected on the basis their need, academic performance, discipline and attendance. The assistance programme kicked off in Mid August when about 100 students attending primary and high schools in communities located close to the company’s mine operations, as well as tertiary level institutions received their books or bursaries towards school fees at a ceremony at the Harmons Valley All Age School, Manchester. Speaking at the ceremony Jamalco’s Managing Director, Jerome Maxwell, urged the students to make positive use of the assistance and their time in school. He explained that although the company is operating in a worldwide recession it continues to provide education assistance to students because Jamalco believes in the value of a good education. “We commit ourselves to continue building our communities through education because we believe that our success rests on the success of our future generation” he added. Motivational speaker and Education Officer in the Ministry of Education, Charmaine Godden-Montieth used music, a story and poetry in her presentation to tell the students that “your life story is written by you day by day.” She told the students and their parents that life challenges ‘are designed not to break us but to bend us to God.” Mrs. Gooden-Monteith reminded the parents and teachers present at the ceremony that “children live what they learn” so they should be careful of the examples they set for children.
