Kemps Hill High Gets Gift–for Child Month

The Kemps Hill High School family in Racecourse, Clarendon received a gift of US$3,000 (J$267,000.00) from the Alcoa Foundation and Jamalco in commemoration of Child Month and in recognition of the schools 36th Anniversary.

The funds were donated to the school  to honour the commitment of Jamalco’s ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together In Our N eighborhoods) volunteers who promised to assist with preparation of new classrooms at the school. ACTION is an Alcoa employee engagement program that recognizes the efforts of teams of Alcoa employees. The program encourages teams of at least five (5) employees to spend a minimum of 4 hours on a community service project for a local nonprofit/NGO.

The Foundation gives the institution US$3,000 to assist with project.
The funds were used to purchase paint and material for three classrooms and a bathroom on a new two-storey classroom block currently under construction at the school and Thirty-one Jamalco employees, drawn mostly from the Precipitation and Raw Materials Departments engaged in a work day to paint the new walls of the classrooms.

Several members of the team, some of whom are past students of the institution, began their voluntary service early in the morning preparing the classrooms for painting.

Omar Morgan, Raw Materials who graduated from the school in 2003, said “I always look forward to give back to my school and today was an opportunity to do just that and to show my gratitude.”  He added that “It was really good to see how everybody united to get the work done and it also demonstrates that Jamalco is really doing something in the community.”

Principal, Leebert Wright extended sincere gratitude to the “gracious group of hard-working and committed members of the Alcoa work team.”  Continuing he said “ I commend them especially for their commitment to community development, in particular education and in support of the school’s 36th Anniversary.”

Mr. Wright said he was particularly amazed at the team members who had no prior direct link with the school.  Commenting on the quality work done He said “The quality work that they have done speaks volumes about their voluntary spirit and I want to encourage them to keep on serving mankind even if they do not benefit personally. The current and future generations will benefit from the seeds you have sown”.

The first floor of the building is completed and the classrooms were commissioned into use earlier in the school term.  The construction has allowed the school to terminate the two shift system and return to one shift per days.
