Explosion at Fjardaal substation
An explosion took place in the substation of the Alcoa Fjardaal smelter in Reydarfjordur just after 5.00 pm today, Saturday, December 18, causing a fire in the substation. Nobody was injured and Alcoa Fjardaal employees immediately activated the emergency response system, which was followed by response from the local fire brigades. Fire fighters managed to extinguish the fire around 9:30 pm.

Public meeting in the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter
Alcoa Fjardaál invited the residents of Fjardabyggd and surrounding communities to an open, public meeting in the Fjardaál smelter yesterday. More than thirty guests attended the meeting, which is an annual event, where the company presents information about its operations and welcomes enquiries from members of the community.

Alcoa Named Brazil´s “Sustainable Company of the Year” by Exame Magazine
Alcoa has been named “Sustainable Company of the Year” in Brazil’s Exame magazine’s 2010 Sustainability Guide, the Company announced today. The annual guide, in its 11th edition, selects and recognizes the sustainable actions of 20 model companies every year.

All four-year olds in East-Iceland presented with a good book
All four year old children in East Iceland get the book The Animal’s Alphabet by Icelandic writer Halldór Á. Elvarsson as a gift from libraries in East Iceland. Alcoa Fjardaál sponsors the project.

Alcoa Launches Aluminum Can Recycling App for iPhone
Alcoa announced today the launch of a free, user-friendly iPhone application compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad that will make it fun and easy for consumers to recycle aluminum cans. The new app – called AluminateTM – will help consumers find recycling centers, track how many aluminum cans they recycle, and calculate the cash they can earn as they help protect the environment through recycling aluminum cans.

Thirty million dollar investment and dozens of jobs in new Pot Relining Shop
Today, the ground was broken for the new Pot Relining Shop on the Alcoa Fjarðaál smelter site in Reydarfjördur, which will presumably be finished in early 2012. The total investment for the Pot Relining Shop is estimated to be around 3.5 billion ISK, or over 30 million dollars.

More than a Million for Icelandic Rescue Squad on 10.10.10
On Sunday 10.10.10, almost thirty volunteers from Alcoa Fjardaál, their families and Ársól Resque Squad members - a total of sixty volunteers - helped Ársól with various kinds of jobs around the squad's headquarters. The highlight of the day was a surprise visit from Marcos Ramos, Director of Alcoa Europe, who brought a check of 10,000 US$ for the squad.

Sómastadir opened after renovation
The renovation of Sómastadir in Reydarfjördur, East Iceland, is now finished, and the house was formally opened at a ceremony on 17 August. The Alcoa Foundation supported the project with a contribution of ISK 16 million. Sómastadir is in close vicinity of the Fjardaál aluminum smelter.

Alcoa Inc. and Exal Corporation have announced that the lightweight, sustainable Coil-to-Can®, or “C2C”, aluminum bottle made from Alcoa’s bottlestock sheet and Exal’s C2C manufacturing technology won the top honor, a prestigious Diamond Award, in the 22nd annual DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation. Alcoa Reports Second Quarter 2010 Results
Alcoa (NYSE: AA) today announced second quarter 2010 income from continuing operations of $137 million or $0.13 per share compared with a first quarter 2010 loss from continuing operations of $194 million, or a loss of $0.19 per share. First quarter 2010 results included restructuring and special charges of $295 million, or $0.29 per share. The second quarter of 2009 showed a loss from continuing operations of $312 million, or $0.32 per share including restructuring charges.

Alcoa volunteers help to move education outdoors in East Iceland
Outdoor school rooms have been established at the elementary schools in Egilsstadir and Reydarfjördur in East Iceland. Alcoa Fjardaál employees and PTA members at both schools volunteered for these projects, which are funded by the Alcoa foundation as part of the company’s global ACTION volunteer program.

Severe Flooding Forces Temporary Idling of Alcoa’s Aviles, Spain Aluminum Smelter
Alcoa today announced it has temporarily idled its aluminum smelter in Aviles, Spain as a result of torrential flooding in the Asturias region of Spain late last week. The Aviles smelter has a production capacity of 93,000 metric tons per year.

Comments must be submitted before June 14th
A joint Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on account of the intended Bakki smelter project, power projects and power transmission lines was introduced in three public meetings held in North Iceland and one in Reykjavík in the beginning of May. Whereas the meeting in Húsavík attracted most visitors, around 70 people, the total number of visitors to all the meetings was over one hundred.

Alcoa Names Paula Davis President, Alcoa Foundation
Alcoa has named Paula Davis President of the Alcoa Foundation, one of the largest corporate foundations in the U.S., effective May 10. She succeeds Meg McDonald, who resigned earlier this year to return to her native Australia. Alcoa Foundation plays a significant role in strengthening sustainability in Alcoa communities worldwide, investing over $515 million since 1952. The work of Alcoa Foundation is further enhanced by Alcoa’s thousands of employee volunteers, who in 2009 gave over 650,000 service hours.

Alcoa Fjardaál is so far unaffected by volcanic eruptions in the Eyjafjallajökull glacier in South Iceland, approximately 300 km (188 miles) away. However, the Fjardaál Team in Iceland has made a comprehensive action plan should ash fall in the area.

Jeff Clemmensen recognized as Fjardaál's "Everyday Hero"
An American couple whom Jeff Clemmensen, an Alcoa Fjardaál employee, assisted when they had car trouble on Oddsskard mountain road in Iceland last summer, have founded an award for Fjardaál‘s „Everyday Hero.“ Sómi, the employees‘ association, will present the award annually to an employee who has shown particular helpfulness to a stranger. Jeff was presented with the first award at the Fjardaál Annual Ball held earlier this month.

Important recognition of ICE-SAR: A grant from the Alcoa Foundation
The Alcoa Foundation has decided to support ICE-SAR rescue teams in East Iceland with a two-year grant of 100,000 US$. The grant will be a founding contribution for the East-Iceland Rescue Teams Education and Training Fund. Alcoa Finishes 4Q 2009 Strong; Free Cash Flow Positive, Revenues Up 18%
Alcoa yesterday announced it finished its fourth quarter 2009 free cash flow positive, the first such quarterly achievement since the second quarter of 2008 when the economic downturn began to impact results. The Company is ahead of its key financial goals for 2009, including being free cash flow neutral by the end of the year. In the fourth quarter of 2009, Alcoa generated free cash flow of $761 million, a $947 million improvement from the third quarter of 2009 driven by strong cash from operations performance of $1.1 billion, a $940 million increase from the third quarter of 2009. The Company also surpassed targets for each of its Cash Sustainability Program initiatives in 2009, a major contributor to the strong cash performance.
