Thirty million dollar investment and dozens of jobs in new Pot Relining Shop

Today, the ground was broken for the new Pot Relining Shop on the Alcoa Fjarðaál smelter site in Reydarfjördur, which will presumably be finished in early 2012. The total investment for the Pot Relining Shop is estimated to be around 3.5 billion ISK, or over 30 million dollars.

During the construction period, 60-80 people will work on the project full time, and when construction reaches its height, they will be around 160. When in operation, the Pot Relining Shop will create several permanent, full time positions. This is in addition to the 800 jobs that have already been created on the smelter site in Reydarfjördur.

The engineering firm Hatch oversees the construction for Fjardaál in cooperation with HRV Engineering Company. Other Icelandic companies will also involved in the project, as well as other Icelandic companies. Tandraberg in Eskifjördur has been hired for the excavation work for the building, and negotiations with more conctractors for other phases of the construction, are ongoing.

The Pot Relining Shop consists of three parts, that is the Pot Relining building, the Spent Pot Lining building and an office building. Together, the floor area of the three buildings is about four thousand square meters. Aluminum is produced in 336 pots in the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter, which need to be relined every 5-7 years.

The new Pot Relining Shop will have facilities to line three pots at the time. The facilities also include an area to cool down pots, a repair shop and storage areas for various kinds of equipment. In the Spent Pot Lining (SPL) building, the pots are cleaned and the SPL is placed into containers, which are sent to Britain for recycling, and end up as a resource for cement production.
