Gymnast gets the 2010 Honor Athlete Award
Ten grants were presented by Sprettur - the Athlete Fund, sponsored by Alcoa, as part of the annual Fjardaál Sports Festival on Saturday.
Thirty-six applications were turned in this year, and it wasn't easy for the selection committee to choose the winner athletes. The fund allocated one Honor Athlete Award, four practice grants, three coach awards and two fellowship awards to sports associations, a total of 670,000 ISK (5,300 US$). Sara Thöll Halldórsdóttir, a gymnast from Höttur Sports Association, received the 2010 Honor Athlete Award for her outstanding performance in gymnastics. Practice grants of 50,000 ISK were awarded to basketball players Andrés Kristleifsson and Eysteinn Bjarni Ævarsson, soccer player Tadas Jocys and gymnast Valdís Ellen Kristjánsdóttir. All of these young people have shown phenomenal dedication to their field of sports. Ski coach Gudný Margrét Bjarnadóttir, golf coach Jóhann Arnarson and volleyball coach Miglena Kostova Apostolova were presented with the coaching grants and KAJ Kayak Club and the Stafdal Ski Club got the fellowship awards. Sprettur Athlete Fund is a cooperation project between UÍA (East Iceland Youth Sports Association) and Alcoa, and is fully funded by Alcoa Fjardaál.
Elín Rán Björnsdóttir, president of UÍA, said that this cooperation is immensely important for sports practice in East Iceland. "This makes it possible for young athletes to dedicate themselves more fully to their chosen sports field, provides coaches with an opportunity to enhance their education, and gives the fellowship sports associations a change to improve their operations. It is immensely valuable and very pleasureable to enjoy Alcoa's support and work with the company on improved opportunities in sports practice in East Iceland," said Elín Rán. The next allocation from the fund will be in October and the deadline will be announced on UIA's web site in September 2010.
