Alcoa Fjardaál prepared for possible ash fall from volcanic eruption
Alcoa Fjardaál is so far unaffected by volcanic eruptions in the Eyjafjallajökull glacier in South Iceland, approximately 300 km (188 miles) away. However, the Fjardaál Team in Iceland has made a comprehensive action plan should ash fall in the area.
Because of its isolated situation on an island in the North Atlantic, the Fjardaál smelter had to make special arrangements for having necessary spare parts on stock or being able to get them quickly by air. The Fjardaál procurement team has been working on guaranteeing that the supply of spares is sufficient in case air traffic stops for a longer or shorter period of time. The ashes from the eruption have, since it started, been blowing southwards, or to the southeast, causing air traffic issues across northern Europe. Should the winds change and ashes blow to the northeast, to the smelter site in Reydarfjordur, around 300 km away from the crater, the Alcoa Iceland team is ready to do whatever possible to prevent disturbance or a halt in production. The Alcoa Fjardaál team in Iceland is monitoring closely filters and air intakes. An emergency callout plan has been activated and good connections have been made to the Iceland Meterorological Institute that makes predictions for the ashfall. The eruption has now slowed down a little, but Fjardaál will continue to watch the situation carefully
