2010 Golden Egg Innovation Award to Remake Electric

The growth company Remake Electric recently received the 2010 Golden Egg Innovation Award as the winner of Innovit's innovation competition. A total of 300 business ideas were submitted. Alcoa Fjardaál is one of the main sponsors of the competition this year.

Remake Electric has created an accessible solution for consumers to monitor electricity consumption. The company has a solution for professionals and novice users to gain immediate access to electrical consumption data. The patented solution is based on the creation of a novel electrical protection device, a Circuit Breaker Meter. These are composed of methods to measure electricity and electrical circuits. With this technology, the SME has developed a method that measures electrical current through a circuit breaker which displays the data on its frontface. The display is simple and accessible and includes coloured LED lights to show data levels. These indicate the electrical charge state When the circuit breaker has reached a near maximum electrical current, an acoustic alarm signal generates awareness of risky electrical load (charge) situations.

By these simple methods, the SME can offer increased electrical appliance life-cycle and can provide data in order to increase safety and savings.

This novel technology allows consumers to optimise energy use, reducing negative environmental impacts (CO2 emissions) by decreasing the use of coal, oil, natural gas and fossil fuels.
The device is conveniently placed in traditional electrical panel boxes or distribution panels, which are already used in all domestic and commercial premises with electricity access.

The prize for Remake Electric consists of one million Icelandic krona (8,000 US$), professional consulting from Innovit and the trophy "The Golden Egg" designed by Ásdís Jörundsdóttir.

Katrín Jakobsdóttir, Minister of Culture, presented the prize at a ceremony at the University of Iceland.  Tómas Már Sigurdsson, director of Alcoa Iceland, was one of the members of the selection committee.
