Three new managers in the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter
Three new managers have joined the Alcoa Fjardaál management team. Magnús Thór Ásmundsson is the new Manager of Production Development, Gudný Björg Hauksdóttir Manager of Safety and Health and Jóhann F. Helgason Manager of Reliability. Whereas earlier, three of the company’s twelve managers were women, they are now four.

Failure in landing equipment caused alumina drift A failure occurred in landing equipment when alumina was being unloaded from a carrier in Mjóeyri harbor by the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter last Saturday, August 22nd. As a result of the failure, alumina fell down on the top of the alumina silo. Some dust drifted over the surrounding area because of the incident, but cleanup was swift and successful and was finished on Sunday.

Alcoa Second Quarter 2009 Results – Solid Cash Performance Alcoa yesterday announced it generated cash from operations in the second quarter of 2009 of $328 million, a $599 million improvement from the first quarter. This improvement was driven by the Company’s wide-ranging financial and operational initiatives to reduce costs, increase cash, and strengthen its balance sheet.

Northern Sprouts appear in Northeast Iceland Today, the Alcoa Foundation presented the University of Akureyri (UNAK) with a grant of 52,500 US dollars to launch an innovation programme under the name of Northern Sprouts. Alcoa in Iceland, the University of Akureyri and Impra Innovation Centre founded the collaboration project late last winter. The project focuses on supporting innovation ideas by individuals seeking employment in Norheast Iceland, possibly leading to more job opportunities in this quarter of Iceland.

Alcoa Foundation grant to the East Iceland Occupational Rehabilitation Centre The Alcoa Foundation has decided to grant the East Iceland Occupational Rehabilitation Centre with 70,000 US$ over a two-year period. Steinthór Thórdarson, HR Manager of Fjardaál, presented the the first part of the grant, 35,000 US$ to the Centre today.

Popular summer jobs in the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter More than 550 applications were received for advertised summer jobs in the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter in Reydarfjordur, East Iceland. The company will hire 60 people for temporary jobs in production and some tradesman positions. The deadline for applications was April 14th and hiring will take place during the next few weeks.

Alcoa Fjardaál signs sponsor agreement for UMFÍ National Competition in July 2009 Co-operation agreements were signed today between the Icelandic Youth Association (UMFÍ) and five companies regarding the 26th UMFÍ Annual Competition held in Akureyri 9-12 July this summer. The main sponsors of the National Competition are Alcoa Fjardaál and KEA. Other sponsors include Icelandair Group, Saga Capital and Landsbankinn (National Bank of Iceland).

Alcoa Takes Decisive Action: Cost Structure Improved and Liquidity Reinforced Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announced today a series of operational and financial actions to significantly improve the Company’s cost structure and liquidity. The operational actions will reduce costs by more than $2.4 billion annually, reduce capital expenditures an additional $1.0 billion in 2010, and improve working capital by $800 million in 2009. The Company is reducing the quarterly common stock dividend from $0.17 to $0.03 per share, saving more than $400 million annually, and launching a public offering of common stock and convertible notes planned to yield proceeds of approximately $1.1 billion.

Iceland‘s biggest theater festival held in East-Iceland this spring Thirteen young actor‘s groups in East-Iceland are now preparing to stage three new Icelandic plays. The staging is part of „Thjódleikur“ – a young people‘s theater festival in East Iceland, which is a co-operative venture between the National Theatre of Iceland and the Fljótsdalur Municipality Cultural Centre. Tómas Már Sigurdsson, Director of Alcoa in Iceland, presented the venture‘s leaders with a grant of 21,300US$ from the Alcoa Foundation at a ceremony in the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter in Reydarfjördur this afternoon.

Alcoa Continues Leadership Position in International Ethical Reputation Ranking Alcoa announced today that it has achieved the top ranking in the Basic Resource category of the 2008 Covalence Ethical Ranking, a methodology that gauges the reputation of international companies. Alcoa was also chosen as one of the top ten ethical companies across all industries and companies. It has been ranked first in the metals and mining industry and in the top ten among all companies since the ranking began in 2005.

Covalence is a Geneva-based NGO that closely monitors 18 sectors comprising 541 companies that are included in the Dow Jones Sector Titans stock index. Its methodology has become the barometer of how multinationals are perceived in the ethical field. Data is classified according to 45 criteria such as labor standards, waste management, product social utility or human rights policy. This year, Covalence increased the number of sectors and companies it monitors to 18 sectors from 10 and 541 companies from 300 companies previously.

Children and young people supported to travel to sports practice Around eighty children benefit by grants from a new travel fund established by the sports association Héradssamband Thingeyinga (HSTH). The first grants were presented today, to 24 parent groups and HSTH clubs that have transported children to HSTH practices. These recipients have driven children 58,501 km (36,350 miles) to practices in the grant period, from January to August 2008.
