Failure in landing equipment caused alumina drift
A failure occurred in landing equipment when alumina was being unloaded from a carrier in Mjóeyri harbor by the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter last Saturday, August 22nd. As a result of the failure, alumina fell down on the top of the alumina silo. Some dust drifted over the surrounding area because of the incident, but cleanup was swift and successful and was finished on Sunday.
Alumina (aluminum oxide), produced from bauxite, is the main raw material for aluminum production. It is a white, fine powder, which resembles table salt in appearance. Alumina is not toxic, and thus there was no environmental hazard because of the equipment failure. Alcoa is making arrangements to ensure that an incident of this kind will not recur.
