National Theatre Festival's finale well attended

The finale of the National Theatre Festival – a grassroots project of the National Theatre's Education Department and the Cultural Centre of Fljotsdalsherad District – was held in Egilsstadir last weekend. The Alcoa Foundation is one of the project's supporters.

About 200 youths from all over East Iceland performed at the festival, and the attendance exceeded all expectations. The theatre groups put on a total of 14 performances of three new Icelandic works and had to add numerous performances because of terrific attendance.

The festival was opened with a gala event in Safnahúsid in Egilsstadir on 24 April in the presence of President of Iceland Olafur Ragnar Grimsson and Minister of Education, Science and Culture Katrin Jakobsdottir.

The National Theatre's Artistic Director Tinna Gunnlaugsdottir opened the festival, remarking how important it is that a grassroots project like the National Theatre Festival be as well received as it has been. The participation of the 13 groups that have worked the entire winter to create new works of art from the plays that the National Theatre commissioned for this occasion is a clear sign of the drive and industriousness of the youth of Iceland, and their interest in the theatre is quite clear.

Acting it out

An acting group from FAS (East Skaftafell County High School) showed a play by Icelandic playwright Sigtryggur Magnason and did it extremely well.
