Congratulations Iceland!
As everyone knows Iceland’s handball team did a terrific job at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Their silver medal marks not only the biggest event in Iceland’s sports history but also a major event in the international world of sports. Never before has such a small nation won a medal in a team sport at the Olympics.

New information sign on highway
There are a lot of details to attend to when a new aluminum smelter opens for operations. Last week a new information sign was set up on the highway by the Alcoa Fjardaal pot rooms.

Hundreds of guests have visited the aluminum smelter this summer
Alcoa Fjardaal has invited guests to visit the aluminum smelter on Saturdays to get to know the company's operations. A great number of guests have accepted the invitation, and last Saturday, for example, over a hundred people visited the smelter.

The locals chose Alcoa
Bergur Elías Ágústsson, mayor of Nordurthing municipality, says in an interview with Vidskiptabladid yesterday that there are no indications that an aluminum smelter will not be built in Bakki. He says that most of the people of North Iceland are hopeful regarding the construction of a smelter in Bakki with the associated power projects in Theistareykir and Gjástykki.

Alcoa Reaches New Renewable Power Deal for Wenatchee, WA Smelter
Alcoa has reached agreement with the Chelan PUD on a new, clean-energy hydropower contract to supply its Wenatchee, Washington aluminum smelter through 2028. The new contract, which begins in 2011, will provide enough energy to enable the start-up of a third potline at the smelter in 2012.

Alcoa presents revised draft EIA proposal for an aluminum smelter at Bakki by Husavik
Alcoa presents a revised draft of proposal for an environmental impact assessment for an aluminum smelter in Bakki by Husavik, N-Iceland, with a productive capacity of 250,000 to 346,000 tons per year. The draft (in Icelandic) is accessible on the web pages of Alcoa (http://www.alcoa.is) and HRV (http://www.hrv.is). The deadline for submitting comments is through 6 August 2008.

Alcoa and Landsnet renew MOU for aluminium smelter in Bakki
Alcoa and Landsnet have renewed a Memorandum of Understanding through the end of 2009 on the transport of electric energy for an aluminum smelter in Bakki, N-Iceland. Work is proceeding in accordance with the plan laid out in the companies' previous MOU.

MOU extended regarding aluminum smelter at Bakki by Husavík
Representatives of Alcoa, the Government of Iceland and the municipality of Nordurthing, North Iceland, today extended until 1 October 2009 their memorandum of understanding on a feasibility study for the proposed smelter at Bakki, Husavík. The MOU that was now signed is an extended and updated version of the MOU signed by these parties in May 2006.

150 Women for Refreshments
On 19 June, Alcoa Fjardaál invited women to pink refreshments. This was in celebration of women's suffrage in Iceland, which was achieved on June 19th, 1915. The celebration was a great success, with between 150 and 160 women of widely varying ages and from the entire region taking advantage of the invitation.

Tourism industry in Northeast Iceland
Frettabladid, the largest newspaper in Iceland, published an op-ed by Hordur Sigurbjarnarson recently. Sigurbjarnarson is CEO of Nordursigling, which is the largeste whale watching company in Husavik, NE-Iceland, where Alcoa is studying the feasability of building an aluminum smelter in Bakki. Sigurbjarnarson declares his whole-hearted support for the project, granted that set rules will be followed, and there will be professional design of structures and all construction. “A diverse economy is the foundation of a flourishing society. A thriving community attracts tourists, and a dynamic tourism industry makes a community colourful and interesting. If matters are handled properly, the construction of an aluminium smelter will further build-up of the tourism industry in the area,” he says.

Alcoa Recognized as Having the Best Safety Performance in the Aluminum Industry
Alcoa announced today that it was the recipient of the International Aluminium Institute’s award for Best Safety Performance in the Worldwide Aluminum Industry for 2007 during the organization’s Annual General Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, last week. The IAI is the global forum of the world's aluminum producers. The Institute has 25 member companies; together these companies represent more than 80% of world primary aluminum production.

Artistic trip through East Iceland
About 100 Icelandic and foreign guests took a Trip through East Iceland on Saturday, with artist Björn Roth as their guide. That trip was a cooperative project of three art institutions in East Iceland: Skaftfell in Seydisfjordur, Sláturhús in Egilsstadir and the Arts Centre in Eidar, and was prepared specifically for the Reykjavík Arts Festival 2008. The program includes installations, events, happenings, dance and musical performance. Alcoa Fjardaal is one of the sponsors of the Trip.

Job security in East Iceland
Helga Jónsdóttir, Mayor of Fjardabyggd, the community where Alcoa Fjardaál is located, said in an interview with State Radio Channels 1 and 2 yesterday, that the job market development in Reydarfjordur for the past year is unique in Iceland. She said that job security is a fundamental issue when it comes to quality of life, and that “the party has started” in East Iceland.

300 pots started
A milestone was reached in the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter on Good Friday, March 21st 2008, when pot number 300 was started. The startup of all pots in one of the two potrooms is now finished and it is expected that the startup of all 336 pots will be finished shortly.

80 million ISK in grants to various projects in 2007
Alcoa Fjardaál and the Alcoa Foundation jointly granted over 80 millions ISK to various community projects in East and North Iceland in 2007. The grants are given to NGOs and institutions for diverse projects with the aim of enriching and fortifying a sustainable community. From 2003, Alcoa has invested a total of 270 millions ISK, or almost 4 million US$ in projects of this kind in Iceland.
